Our partners in Africa who run safari lodges and camps often have close working relationships with nearby communities in what are usually poor rural areas. Africa Exclusive financially contributes to projects to improve the lives of these people - especially the children, and to encourage them to protect and conserve the wildlife and the local environment.
Here are a few examples:
In the South Luangwa, Zambia we are working with Bush Camps to improve the Chilongozi school which has 200 pupils and just one teacher and a run down building. A skilled carpenter and builder have built desks, fixed the roof and there is an ongoing project to train more teachers. A nearby primary school has safari guides giving lessons on wildlife and take children into the national park to educate them about conservation. Many children are orphans and some are being funded to attend school.
The Okavango Community Trust in the Okavango Delta, Botswana, has been set up to help poor villages near safari areas with funds to start small businesses growing vegetables which are purchased for use in safari lodge kitchens. Significant numbers of people from these communities are being trained and employed in safari camps as qualified cooks and safari guides.
Hwange is the largest national park in Zimbabwe with over 20,000 elephant. Working together with our partners we drill and maintain essential bore holes that replenish the waterholes in the critical dry season. Working with the local communities we work to deter poaching and encourage wildlife management. These efforts are helping to conserve this vital national park. Because funds are used by our partners directly with the local communities that need our help, every cent of any amounts given gets through to where it is needed.
