African Honeymoon Safari - Tanzania - Royal Palm, Jongomero, Cape Grace

Day 1 - The Royal Palm Hotel, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

On arrival into Dar Es Salaam you will be met and taken to the Royal Palm Hotel where you stay for one night (bed and breakfast).

A Safari vacation in Tanzania will provide both you and your spouse with some fantastic safari memories. Tanzania has some of the most luxurious lodges and wonderful guides for the perfect African safari.

The Royal Palm is the finest hotel in Dar es Salaam and makes an ideal and convenient base during a stay in the city.

The hotel is set in attractive grounds and we usually endeavour to secure rooms overlooking the well tended gardens, the cricket ground and golf course, and beyond that (about a mile away) the Indian Ocean.

The hotel is now owned by Movenpick and their superior twin and double rooms are spacious and attractively furnished with en suite bathroom, satellite television, telephone and tea/coffee making facilities.

Staff are friendly and efficient and guests can dine in the Tradewinds Restaurants, which claims to do the "best steaks in town", and in the Serengeti Restaurant which usually has themed buffets at lunchtime and in the evening. For pre-dinner drinks you can go to the bar which often has live music and at any time you can enjoy a snack and a drink in the gardens or around the pool.

Days 2 and 3 - Jongomero Camp, Ruaha National Park, Tanzania

In the morning you will be transferred to the airport where you connect with a scheduled flight departing at 0830 to Ruaha, Tanzania. On arrival at 1130 you will be met and taken to Jongomero Camp where you stay for two nights (fully inclusive of meals and activities).

Jongomero is set in a beautiful location overlooking the Jongomero Sand River and is the only safari lodge or camp in the south western section of the Ruaha National Park. The camp has eight enormous tents, each with safari furniture, proper beds, en-suite w.c. and shower and a verandah at the front with views across the river. As you sit outside your tent you can expect to see wildlife and some of Ruaha's 450 species of birds, and beyond the river the plains and forests stretch interminably towards the distant hills.

Jongomero has a large central dining tent where delicious meals are served and a bar, and the highly experienced guides who know this part of the Ruaha like the back of their hands will take you on exciting safaris by open vehicle and on foot, accompanied by armed rangers. Jongomero camp is a fantastic Hoenymoon location as its combines privacy with tranquillity, yet gives you the thrills of being in the African bush and close to nature.

Ruaha is one of Tanzania's most remote national parks, a huge wilderness of over 10,000km_ encompassing rivers, floodplains, open grassland dotted with acacia and baobab trees, forests and mountain country. This wide variety of habitat supports an equally wide range of animals and there are impressive herds of elephants, large herds of buffalo, often numbering several hundred. This is also a great place for antelope spotting and is the only national park in East Africa where sable and roan can be seen together, added to which are around a dozen other species. There are also giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, other plains game and a variety of smaller creatures such as baboon and warthog.

Ruaha is also an exceptionally good place for spotting predators and there are several prides of lion in this part of south western Ruaha, as well as graceful leopard, small families of cheetah and the occasional pack of wild dog. Ruaha's bird count at 450 species is the greatest of any East African national park outside of Uganda and during the long dry months from June to October eagles wheel high in the sky while brilliantly coloured kingfishers dart into the rivers.

Days 4 to 6 - Selous Safari Camp, Selous Game Reserve, Tanzania

After your morning activity you will be transferred to the airstrip for a flight departing at 1145 taking you into the Selous. On arrival at 1305 you will be met and taken to the Selous Safari Camp where you stay for three nights (fully inclusive of meals and activities).

The Selous is the world's largest unspoilt Game Reserve, covering an area of 55,000 sq km. The reserve is dissected by the Rufiji River and is joined by the Great Ruaha in spectacular fashion just up-river from Steigler's Gorge. There are large herds of elephant, buffalo, sable and roan antelope and the Rufiji River teems with hippos, crocodile and exotic birdlife. The Selous is also an exceptionally good area for predator sightings and you should encounter lion, leopard, cheetah and perhaps a pack of scarce wild dog.

Located in the north eastern area of the Selous, Selous Safari Camp provides access to one of the most densely populated game areas in the reserve.

Walking, boating, game drives by open four-wheel drive vehicles and on-foot safaris are all available in whatever combination you wish, accompanied by a knowledgeable, armed guide. Walks can involve exciting encounters with anything from a dung beetle to herds of elephant. By boat you can explore the endless channels of the Rufiji, surrounded by hippos and crocodiles, and by vehicle you can move further afield, seeking out the big herds and exploring seldom visited areas.

Selous Safari Camp accommodates up to eighteen guests in nine large tents mounted on wooden platforms and all fronting onto Lake Nzerekera, located for maximum privacy. Facilities include en suite bathrooms each with flushing w.c. and shower. Guests can enjoy table d'hotel cuisine and the bar is open until the last guest retires to bed. There is also a swimming pool to cool off in the heat of the day.

Days 7 to 10 - The Cape Grace, Cape Town, South Africa

You will be transferred to the airstrip for a flight departing at 1325 to Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. Arrive at 1400 and connect with a further flight departing at 1520 to Cape Town, South Africa. On arrival at 2210 you will be met and taken to the Cape Grace Hotel where you stay for four nights (bed and breakfast). During your time here you will have a private guide and vehicle.

The Cape Grace is quite simply one of the finest hotels in Africa, set in a superb private position on Cape Town's Victoria & Alfred Waterfront with views towards the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the immense flat-topped expanse of Table Mountain to the other. The atmosphere at the hotel combines genuine warmth and friendliness with a very high standard of service and efficiency and while you are here the hotel will be pleased to arrange any excursions in and around Cape Town, either on a private or shared basis. Surrounding the hotel is the Cape Waterfront complex with entertainment, shops and attractive restaurants in an area which is safe to wander around during the day and in the evening.

The Cape Grace is privately owned and not part of a large chain and this is reflected in the comfortable elegance of the furnishings and decor of the rooms, suites and public areas. There are eighty one spacious luxury rooms, ten superior rooms which have balconies with fine views, and eighteen luxury loft rooms which are a located on the top floor, each with terrace and access to their own private lounge facilities. In addition, there are ten suites and two penthouses.

The hotel has a library, lounge, two restaurants a bar, and on the top floor a fully equipped spa and heated swimming pool. Guests also have complimentary access to a conveniently located health club.

In 1662, Jan van Riebeeck sailed into Table Bay on the north Cape Peninsula and laid the foundations of South Africa's oldest settlement, Cape Town. Three hundred and fifty years of history have been preserved in much of Cape Town's architecture, which combines attractively with the more functional demands of the 21st century.

The Houses of Parliament, National Gallery, Museum and Planetarium are all within ambling distance of elegant shopping malls and colourful markets, which entice shoppers to browse and buy everything from souvenirs to African art, gems and antiques. In the last ten years, the restoration of the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront dockland area evokes images of 19th century seafaring activities and provides a superb setting for an array of cafes, restaurants and bars. From here, you can take boat trips round the harbour and out across Table Bay.

Dominating the city's skyline and flanked by Devils Peak is the looming mass of Table Mountain, and visitors should not miss the opportunity to ascend Table Mountain by cable car. The view of the City and the south Atlantic from the summit is quite magnificent a highlight of any South African vacation.

There is a wide range of excursions and activities in and around Cape Town including visits to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was held prisoner, visits to Townships where you can enjoy lunch and exposure to Africa's vibrant urban culture. To the south lies the scenic Peninsula with its attractive sandy bays and pretty little towns. There are remote penguin colonies which can be visited by boat and canoe, and from July to November you can set off further afield in search of southern right whales. The more adventurous can even go looking for sharks in special "caged diving" facilities.

An hour's drive to the east of Cape Town lie the Cape Winelands where you find beautiful undulating scenery covered in ancient vineyards and fruit orchards. There are literally dozens of ancient wineries, many of which are open for tastings and lunch and which have magnificent estate houses. For the golfer there are several beautifully maintained championship golf courses, and the attractive little towns of Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are each worth a visit.

Day 11 - Le Quartier Franscais, Franschhoek, South Africa

In the morning you will be met and taken by road into the Cape Winelands to Franschhoek where you stay for one night at Le Quartier Francais (bed & breakfast).

Le Quartier Francais is a beautiful Cape Provencal property situated in the picturesque village of Franschhoek in the heart of the Cape winelands. Surrounded by vineyards and wineries, this is a splendid base from which to explore the winelands and the western Cape.

The original buildings at Le Quartier Francais were labourers' cottages and when Susan Huxter bought the property in 1989 it was already a popular restaurant. The intimate cloistered Cape-Victorian design is set in tranquil surroundings with the reception, lounge, library and 15 double rooms plus the Pool Suite all set against the lovely backdrop of the Franschhoek mountains. Landscaped gardens and a natural pool offer a haven of tranquillity and the private courtyard with its old-fashioned street lamps recreates the charm of a village square in a bygone era. All the rooms and suites are decorated in a light and airy style and Le Quartier Francais has been a proud member of Relais & Chateau since December 2000.

In addition to the stylish accommodation, Le Quartier Francais is world renowned for its superb award-winning cuisine. The restaurant enjoys beautiful mountain views and the innovative Cape Provencal food has recently earned Le Quartier the accolade as one of the world's fifty best restaurants. The well-stocked wine cellar offers some of the world's finest wines to complement the food, which attracts gourmets from around the globe.

A safari in Tanzania combines exceptionally well with South Africa, especially Cape Town. Where you can spend time with the guides and game, aswell as relaxing on the waterfront and tasting the reputably beautiful South African Wines , in both these fantastically beautiful African locations
