Steve Carey is one of Africa's finest guides. Brought up on a farm in Zimbabwe, he trained under Zimbabwe's demanding professional guide system and achieved the highest qualification which gave him the license to conduct armed walking safaris in Zimbabwe's National Parks. He spent several years building a loyal and enthusiastic clientele, specialising in safaris in the Kariba area before moving to Zambia with his wife, Annabelle, in more recent years. Steve now operates on a large private game reserve on the Zambian side of the Lower Zambezi River, adjoining the Lower Zambezi National Park.
This reserve is dominated by the half mile wide Lower Zambezi with its channels and islands, behind which is a big floodplain with semi dry riverbeds, isolated waterholes, areas of grassland and forest leading about four or five miles inland to the escarpments of the Zambezi Valley. This area is home to a large numbers of elephant, which roam the floodplain and frequently come down to the river to drink, wallow and swim out to nearby islands. There are big cats including lion and leopard, several species of antelope, hyena, herds of buffalo, zebra and many other animals, while in the water are hippopotamus and crocodiles. In the general area, over 300 species of birds are also found and includes several varieties of kingfishers and between July and October, carmine bee-eaters which make their honeycomb nests in the banks of the Zambezi and other rivers.
On his private reserve, Steve is able to conduct fascinating walking safaris when his intimate knowledge of the bush comes to life as you track animals and follow the course of old elephant paths and dry riverbeds. You can also enjoy safaris by open vehicle during the day and after dark with a spotlight, and Steve can take you canoeing down the Zambezi giving you another vantage point from which to enjoy the wildlife. You also have access to the Lower Zambezi National Park where safaris are conducted by open vehicle.
You will be based at Bushbuck Camp, a delightful traditional African camp with three large meru-style tents simply furnished with canvas chairs, proper beds and en suite flush w.c. and bucket shower. Delicious meals can be enjoyed 'al fresco' and the camp overlooks the Chongwe Riverbed, which is usually quite dry from July to October, though has a number of 'pools' which regularly attract antelope, buffalo and sometimes lion.
On 31 August Steve will take you into a remote part of the reserve and he and his assistant will set up a simply 'fly camp' for you. After a lovely barbecue style meal you will be able to go to sleep feeling that you are a hundred miles from the nearest human habitation!
