African Safari Vacation - Botswana and Zambia - Giraffe Manor, The Grace Hotel, Kwara Camp, Lagoon Camp, Lebala Camp, Royal Livingstone

Days 1 to 3 - Giraffe Manor, Nairobi, Kenya

On arrival into Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta Airport in Kenya you will be met and transferred by road to Giraffe Manor where you stay for three nights (full board).

A safari in Zambia, Botswana and Kenya will provide you with some fantastic game viewing memories. Zambia and Botswana have some of the most luxurious lodges for the perfect African safari.

Giraffe Manor is a beautiful manor house built in 1932 by Sir David Duncan, situated in one hundred and twenty acres of beautiful forested land just eight miles from Nairobi city centre.

In 1974 Jock and Betty Leslie-Melville relocated five baby Rothschild giraffe to the grounds and guests can now feed them and their descendants from the second floor bedroom windows.

The home is spacious and elegantly furnished, with five bedrooms. Furniture and books from Karen Blixen and Denys Finch Hatton are to be found around the house.

In the grounds is a primeval forest with small game and many species of birds.

On Days 2 and 3 you will have the opportunity to visit the Elephant Orphanage (as featured on BBC's Elephant Diaries) where the author and conservationist Daphne Sheldrick cares for abandoned young elephants and rhinos. Her experiences are told in her books The Tsavo Story and An Elephant called Eleanor. As you have sponsored six elephants at the orphanage, in addition to a morning visit between 1100 and 1200 on day 2, you are also able to make a further visit which is only available for sponsors. The sponsors visits take place between 1700 and 1800 and we will arrange transport on both day 2 and day 3 to enable you to further explore the work of the orphanage and hopefully meet up with "your" elephants!

Day 4 - The Grace Hotel, Johannesburg, South Africa

In the afternoon you will be transferred to Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta Airport to board the South African Airways flight SA183 departing at 1540 to Johannesburg, South Africa. On arrival at 1900 you will be met and transferred to the Grace Hotel where you stay for one night (bed and breakfast).

Situated in the heart of Rosebank, a secure and leafy suburb, The Grace has been designed in the neo-classical style with understated elegance, without losing personal charm. There are cosmopolitan restaurants, shops, cinemas, art galleries and craft markets all within walking distance, and there is easy access to Johannesburg's airport.

Providing exclusive, comfortable accommodation and service which is personal and efficient, there are seventy-five bedrooms, fifteen of which are suites, all decorated to the highest standard. Fine and imaginative cuisine is served in the restaurant adjoining a sunny roof garden and poolside terrace. At the pool terrace light meals, teas and drinks are served high above the hum of the streets below.

Days 5 to 7 - Kwara Camp, Okavango Delta, Botswana

In the morning you will be transferred to Johannesburg Airport to board the Air Botswana flight BP212 departing at 1000 to Maun, Botswana. On arrival at 1140 you will be met and transferred by light aircraft into the Okavango Delta where you stay for three nights at Kwara Camp (fully inclusive of meals and activities).

Kwara Camp sits in the heart of the Okavango Delta on a very large private area of land, which encompasses not only the open lagoons and shallow waterways of the Okavango, but also great expanses of savannah and forest leading to the Moremi Wildlife Reserve. Altogether the Kwara Reserve measures 1750km_ and the camp itself is hidden on a large wooded island with just eight huge tents set under a big shady canopy of trees. The view from each tent is excellent and encompasses the plains and lagoons of the delta and each has en-suite w.c. and shower, two wash basins and large bed with safari furniture and veranda.

The reserve has so many different types of habitat that you can expect to enjoy excellent game viewing here, including sightings of big herds of plains game such as zebra, wildebeest, a variety of antelope, giraffe and buffalo. The reserve also has resident prides of lion, as well as leopard and hyena and you can also expect to see a host of smaller creatures such as warthog, baboon and, on night drives, porcupine and civet cats. Elephants are also present in large numbers and you can spend hours watching these magnificent creatures, with their complex family structures, roaming the Okavango floodplains.

You can enjoy a wide variety of game viewing activities including traditional mokoro canoeing, boating, walks with an armed guide and tracker and drives by open vehicle during the day and at night. Because of this variety and flexibility we usually recommend a stay of at least three nights here.

Days 8 and 9 - Lagoon Camp, Linyanti Delta, Botswana

After your morning activity you will be transferred by light aircraft to Lagoon Camp where you stay for two nights (fully inclusive of meals and activities).

Lagoon Camp is located on the largest private game viewing reserve in Botswana - the Kwando Concession, which extends for 2320km_ and which has a private river frontage along the Kwando River extending for fifty miles. Only two camps share this immense area of prime game viewing country - Lagoon Camp and its sister camp, Lebala, which lies 35kms to the south. The Concession encompasses part of the Linyanti and Kwando River systems which includes slow flowing rivers and big lagoons leading on to areas of rich forest, ebony, marula and sausage trees. Further afield are great expanses of open grassland dotted with baobab trees with isolated waterholes.

This huge area of land supports large numbers of animals including large herds of elephant and buffalo, a wide variety of antelope including water-adapted species such as tsessebe and endangered species like roan and sable, as well as giraffe and other plains game. This is also a particularly good area of seeing predators and lion are very much in evidence, as well as leopard and cheetah. A pack of wild dog have also denned in the area for the last eight years running.

Because Lagoon Camp is set on private land you can enjoy the widest range of game viewing options here including drives by open vehicle during the day and at night when a spotlight is used to see nocturnal creatures, and you can also enjoy walking at the discretion of the guides. On these walks you are accompanied by a tracker as well as an armed guide, following the course of old elephant paths through the bush, walking along the river's banks pausing regularly to look at tracks, to learn fascinating facts about plants and to admire birds and the beautiful scenery. You can also enjoy boat rides at Lagoon Camp on the Kwando River using the camp's double-decker river boat, which is particularly good for bird watching and for watching animals as they come down to drink at sunset.

The accommodation is in eight huge luxury tented rooms with king size or twin beds, safari furniture, en-suite flush w.c., shower and hand basins with hot/cold running water, and fine views across the lagoon. The camp has an excellent staff of guides, is very well managed and the standard of cuisine is very good indeed.

Days 10 to 12 - Lebala camp, Linyanti Delta, Botswana

Enjoy a game drive en-route to Lebala Camp where you stay for three nights (fully inclusive of meals and activities).

Lebala Camp is situated on a peninsula of land jutting into the heart of the Linyanti Delta that surrounds the camp. This delta comprises big seasonal floodplains, hundreds of square miles of savannah, as well as varied forest which includes mopane trees, huge old baobabs and acacia; all of which attracts a very large number and wide range of animals.

Lebala Camp is located on the largest private game viewing concession in Botswana - the 2320km_ Kwando Concession. It shares this enormous area of land in northern Botswana with its sister camp, Lagoon Camp, and because the concession is private you can enjoy the widest possible range of game viewing activities which include walking with an armed guide and tracker, game drives by open vehicle both during the day and at night with a spotlight to view nocturnal creatures. There is also a hide close to the camp where you can enjoy exciting 'close up' game viewing and bird watching.

This huge reserve attracts very large numbers of animals including large herds of elephant including lone bulls and big breeding herds, herds of buffalo, graceful looking giraffe and a wide variety of antelope, zebra, wildebeest and other plains game. More rare antelope such as roan, sable, sitatunga and lechwe are regularly seen. This reserve is also a very good place for spotting predators and wild dogs regularly den in the area, and if you add the cheetah, leopard and lion which all inhabit the reserve you have an exciting predator population.

The bird watching in this area is also very good indeed with approximately 400 species including big eagles, brilliantly coloured kingfishers, storks, herons and an enormous variety of other birds. Your guides would know every one.

The accommodation here is very comfortable with just eight huge tents set on a raised wooden deck with en-suite bathroom (flush w.c. and shower), proper beds, safari furniture and a private veranda facing onto the open plains. The standard of cuisine here is very good indeed and all drinks and laundry are included.

Days 13 and 14 - The Royal Livingstone, Livingstone, Zambia

You will be transferred by light aircraft to Kasane, Northern Botswana. Once you have cleared customs you connect with a further light aircraft flight taking you over the waterfall en-route to Livingstone where you will stay at the Royal Livingstone Hotel for two nights (bed and breakfast).

The Royal Livingstone, on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls brings a new level of luxury and sophistication to this world-famous region. This comfortable modern, well equipped hotel is an excellent base to see the waterfall and to enjoy the many activities on the river and around the Falls.

The bedrooms are two-storey clusters inspired by the grand estate houses of a bygone era. Each cluster comprises ten en-suite air-conditioned rooms with private balconies and terraces that offer spectacular views of the great river and beyond.

Each room offers a quiet retreat from the ruggedness of Africa, with large shaded verandas and open spaces cooled by swirling fans and tall shutters. The travellers bar and lounge is a place where guests can relax under thatched shade, decorated in greens, creams and ebony. There is a large pool and the restaurants are very good, serving international cuisine.

While you are at Victoria Falls, you can enjoy a wide range of activities, including flights across the waterfall by helicopter and light aircraft, white water rafting, canoeing, sundowner cruises and safaris. Guests can also walk to the mile wide waterfall, which can be viewed from several vantage points along the network of pathways.

This is marvellous trip where Botswana, Kenya, South Africa and Zambia are all visited giving you and broad safari vacation at many romantic and luxury lodges and camps in superb locations in Africa.
