African Safari Vacation - Kenya - Norfolk Hotel, Kichwa Tembo, Tortilis Camp

Day 1 - The Norfolk Hotel, Nairobi, Kenya

On arrival into Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta Airport, Kenya from your flight you will be met and transferred to the Norfolk Hotel where you stay for one night (bed and breakfast).

A safari in Kenya will provide both you with some fantastic memories. Kenya has some of the most luxurious lodges for the perfect African safari.

The city of Nairobi has grown up around The Norfolk Hotel, which first opened its doors to the public on Christmas Day 1904. You will get a feel for Kenya's history from the photographic enlargements of old Kenya scenes in the Pioneer Room to the rickshaw, vintage car and other museum transport pieces in the hotel's beautiful and extensive gardens which also contain aviaries of indigenous and exotic birds.

The bedrooms, suites and cottages are quiet and comfortable. Twenty-four hour room service is provided as well as colour television, personal bar and radio.

Guests can choose from three restaurants - the Ibis Grill, a tranquil setting with quietly efficient service and excellent a la carte menu; the Delamere Terrace and Bar, an attractive terrace, providing drinks and light meals; and the Swimming Pool Restaurant.

The Norfolk Hotel is situated opposite the National Theatre and is only five minutes walk from the city centre shops, nightclubs and restaurants.

Kichwa Tembo Camp is located in the western Masai Mara on a large area of private land, near the Mara River with beautiful views across the rolling plains. It is ideally located for game viewing in the Mara where between July and September the annual migration of two million wildebeest and 300,000 zebra and a whole host of other animals will be present. Game viewing is by vehicle under the guidance of the camps expert rangers. At extra cost you can also enjoy a hot air balloon ride at dawn, and visits to a local Maasai community.

Kichwa Tembo has forty large luxury walk-in tents, each with twin beds and en suite flush w.c. with hot and cold shower. The standard of food and management is excellent. The main lodge area has a shady dining room, lounge and a good sized pool.

The Masai Mara is one of the world's most famous and spectacular game viewing regions. Vast expanses of undulating grassy plains roll from horizon to horizon dotted with acacia trees and isolated rocky outcrops covering an area of 1800km_.

The rich grasslands and watering places in the Masai Mara sustain very large numbers of plains game including thousands of elephant, graceful-looking giraffe and big herds of buffalo. There are also zebra, wildebeest and a host of smaller creatures such as baboon, warthog and jackal. There are great herds of antelope, which range from the diminutive topi to majestic-looking kudu. The Masai Mara is also a particularly good place to see predators and big prides of lion compete with leopard and cheetah for food and territory. From July to September the annual migration of over a million wildebeest and zebra passes through the Masai Mara creating one of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles with seemingly endless lines of wildebeest strung out as far as the eye can see across the plains.
