African Safari Vacation - South Africa and Tanzania - Table Bay Hotel, The Plettenberg, Singita Sweni, Singita Boulders, Arusha Coffee Lodge and The Palm Hotel

Days 1 to 3 - Table Bay Hotel, Cape Town, South Africa

On arrival into Cape Town you will be met and taken to the Table Bay Hotel where you stay for three nights in a luxury room (bed & breakfast).

During your stay at Table Bay Hotel you will have the services of a private guide and private vehicle to take you wherever you wish whenever you want to travel on private excursions (entrance fees at additional cost).

An enchanting hotel on the southern tip of Africa, with magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean, breathtaking mountains and the bay, the Table Bay Hotel offers genuine luxury, exemplary standards of service and haute cuisine.

Superbly located in a prime position along the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, this magnificent world-class hotel of contemporary Victorian design embodies the traditions of a bygone era whilst encompassing the indulgence of today's sophisticated, modern age.

The three hundred and twenty nine rooms and suites are superbly appointed including little extras such as a kimono and matching slippers. Each room overlooks either the Victoria & Alfred working harbour, or the world-renowned Robben Island, where President Mandela spent most of his prison life.

Facilities include a health spa offering a wide variety of massages and aromatherapeutic treatments. There is also a Jacuzzi and a heated salt-water pool.

In 1662, Jan van Riebeeck sailed into Table Bay on the north Cape Peninsula and laid the foundations of South Africa's oldest settlement, Cape Town. Three hundred and fifty years of history have been preserved in much of Cape Town's architecture, which combines attractively with the more functional demands of the 21st century.

The Houses of Parliament, National Gallery, Museum and Planetarium are all within ambling distance of elegant shopping malls and colourful markets, which entice shoppers to browse and buy everything from souvenirs to African art, gems and antiques. In the last ten years, the restoration of the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront dockland area evokes images of 19th century seafaring activities and provides a superb setting for an array of cafes, restaurants and bars. From here, you can take boat trips round the harbour and out across Table Bay.

Dominating the city's skyline and flanked by Devils Peak is the looming mass of Table Mountain, and visitors should not miss the opportunity to ascend Table Mountain by cable car. The view of the City and the south Atlantic from the summit is quite magnificent.

There is a wide range of excursions and activities in and around Cape Town including visits to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was held prisoner, visits to Townships where you can enjoy lunch and exposure to Africa's vibrant urban culture. To the south lies the scenic Peninsula with its attractive sandy bays and pretty little towns. There are remote penguin colonies which can be visited by boat and canoe, and from July to November you can set off further afield in search of southern right whales. The more adventurous can even go looking for sharks in special "caged diving" facilities.

An hour's drive to the east of Cape Town lie the Cape Winelands where you find beautiful undulating scenery covered in ancient vineyards and fruit orchards. There are literally dozens of ancient wineries, many of which are open for tastings and lunch and which have magnificent estate houses. For the golfer there are several beautifully maintained championship golf courses, and the attractive little towns of Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are each worth a visit.

Days 4 to 7 - The Plettenberg, Cape Town, South Africa

In the morning you will be transferred to Cape Town Airport where you board a scheduled flight taking you to George. On arrival you will be met and taken by private road transfer to Plettenberg Bay where you stay for four nights at The Plettenberg in a Premier Suite (bed & breakfast).

During your stay at The Plettenberg you may wish to engage the services of a private guide and vehicle, to enable you to visit the surrounding area at your own pace.

The central 'Garden Route' has spectacular coastal scenery while inland are great forests and the Swartberg mountains. George, Knysna and Plettenberg rival Cape Town/Winelands for superb restaurants, golf courses, riding, sailing and touring opportunities. The Outeniqua Choo Tjoe steam train can also take you on a marvellous three hour ride past the Knysna Lagoon and the coastal foothills running between George and Knysna. The area has some fine beaches of which Plettenberg Bay is the most famous.

This prestigious hotel is situated on the magnificent Look Out promontory in Plettenberg Bay. Originally a 19th century mansion belonging to the Thesen family of Knysna, The Plettenberg was rebuilt by owner Liz McGrath, to provide exclusive accommodation for the discerning traveller. Built on a dramatic rocky headland, which separates the two main swimming beaches, this exclusive hotel, reminiscent of a gracious country house, surrounds the guests with elegance, comfort and privacy.

The hotel is stylishly decorated using the finest antiques, creating an attractive decorative effect. Bedrooms and suites, most with stunning sea views, have all been individually decorated and are all en suite. Most of the Premier Suites have French doors and step-out balconies. All of the suites have under floor heating and are air-conditioned. There is also a beautiful resident's bar as well as a more formal sitting room.

Six miles of golden sand and good surf encourage water sports, an important feature of a vacation at Plettenberg Bay. There is superb whale watching from June to November - from the terrace, with dolphins dancing in the waves every day of the year.

Days 8 to 10 - Singita Sweni, Kruger National Park, South Africa

You will be taken by road transfer to George Airport where you board a scheduled flight to Johannesburg. Connect with a further scheduled flight taking you to Kruger (Mpumalanga) Airport where you will be met on arrival and taken to stay for three nights at Singita Sweni (fully inclusive of meals and activities).

Singita Sweni is one of the finest all-round safari lodges in South Africa. It combines the highest quality accommodation, cuisine and spa facilities with an authentic top quality adventurous game viewing experience. While most safari lodges in and around the Kruger are located on relatively small private reserves, which are shared with their neighbours leading to sometimes quite busy game viewing conditions, Singita Sweni and its sister camp, Lebombo, are the only lodges allowed to use this prime 15,000-hectare private game reserve which is located within the eastern part of the Kruger National Park. It is very separate from other safari lodges.

This part of the Kruger area is rather drier, with large areas of open plains, forests and two rivers, which attract large numbers of wildlife, and the animals here are very numerous. On a safari at Singita Sweni you can expect to see many elephant, a variety of antelope, good numbers of giraffe, zebra, substantial herds of buffalo and many other creatures both great and small. This is also a very good part of the Kruger for sighting predators with cheetah, leopard and lion all present in good numbers.

While some South African lodges focus far more on the luxury than on the game viewing experience, this is not the case at Singita Sweni. The guides are highly experienced and will take you on safari on foot when their finely honed tracking skills become apparent and they reveal their deep love and knowledge of not only the larger and more obvious creatures, but the fascinating aspects of vegetation, birdlife, insects and smaller creatures which live together to sustain their fragile environment. Larger numbers of big game can be seen as you take drives by open vehicle throughout the reserve, during the day and at night when you may see nocturnal creatures such as porcupine, civet, honeybadger and aardvark.

Singita Sweni is one of the most luxurious safari lodges in Africa with six air-conditioned suites measuring approximately 100m_. The accommodation is largely open plan with an enormous bed, elegant furnishings, two bathrooms and massage bed, and outside your huge glass frontage is a balcony with fine views across the river and the reserve. Singita Sweni also has a high quality spa with a wide range of treatments, a good size pool, a gym and superb restaurant where the finest cuisine is served.

This lodge has all the ingredients for a superbly luxurious private and exciting safari.

Day 11 and 12 - Singita Boulders Camp, Kruger National Park, South Africa

You will be transferred to Singita Boulders Camp where you stay for two nights (fully inclusive of meals and activities).

Singita Boulders Game Lodge is situated in a grove of giant ebony and knobthorn trees above the steep banks of the Sand River.

Sleeping just eighteen people, Singita provides and exceptionally high quality safari experience. The airy main lodge has sweeping views over the river and open plain beyond, with a leisure deck overhanging the river - an ideal venue for relaxation and dining al fresco.

Each of the nine luxurious suites has a very large bedroom, lounge and bathroom, all air-conditioned and with wonderful views across the Sand River. Each suite also has a private pool.

Singita has an extensive wine cellar, a library and reading room, a health club with gymnasium and a beautiful pool cantilevered off a riverbank.

As with your stay at Singita Sweni, you will be able to enjoy the wildlife in the company of highly expert guides by open vehicle, and on foot. You can also enjoy exciting night drives using a spotlight to encounter nocturnal species such as aardvark, porcupine and leopard on the prowl.

Days 13 and 14 - Arusha Coffee Lodge, Arusha, Tanzania

You will be transferred to the airport for a scheduled flight returning you to Johannesburg Airport, where you board a scheduled flight departing at 1310 to Kilimanjaro. On arrival at 1955 you will be met by your private guide and vehicle and taken to the Arusha Coffee Lodge where you stay for two nights (bed & breakfast). Your guide will remain at your disposal during your stay in Arusha.

Opened in December 2001, Arusha Coffee Lodge is a stylish, comfortable and efficient and is an ideal to acclimatise before your safari.

The lodge consists of 23 luxury chalets which are creatively decorated. Each chalet is spaced throughout the lush coffee grove to ensure privacy and solitude. The beds are very comfortable and furnishings are top quality with lots of interesting coffee themed artefacts. There is even a little sitting room with couch and chairs off from the bedroom. The bathrooms are grand with nice fixtures including bath and shower. One of the nicest features is the private wooden deck attached to each chalet which overlooks the coffee plantation. As the majority of arrivals are at night, the deck offers a great morning spot to experience your first sights and sounds of Africa. You might spot the first wildlife of your safari as vervet monkeys can be seen as they clamber around.

There is a swimming pool and spa area behind the reception and restaurant, and the lodge also has a wonderful bar and lounge area which offers a great atmosphere.

Days 15 and 16 - The Royal Palm Hotel, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Your private guide will transfer you to Kilimanjaro Airport where you bid him farewell and board a scheduled flight departing at 1550 to Dar es Salaam. On arrival at 1740 you will be met by your private guide and vehicle and taken to the Royal Palm where you stay for two nights (bed & breakfast). Your guide will remain at your disposal during your stay in Dar es Salaam.

The Royal Palm is the finest hotel in Dar es Salaam and makes an ideal and convenient base during a stay in the city.

The hotel is set in attractive grounds and we usually endeavour to secure rooms overlooking the well tended gardens, the cricket ground and golf course, and beyond that (about a mile away) the Indian Ocean.

The hotel is now owned by Movenpick and their superior twin and double rooms are spacious and attractively furnished with en suite bathroom, satellite television, telephone and tea/coffee making facilities.

Staff are friendly and efficient and guests can dine in the Tradewinds Restaurants, which claims to do the "best steaks in town", and in the Serengeti Restaurant which usually has themed buffets at lunchtime and in the evening. For pre-dinner drinks you can go to the bar which often has live music and at any time you can enjoy a snack and a drink in the gardens or around the pool.

Day 17

Today you can spend the day at leisure (your private guide and vehicle will be at your disposal). Transfer to the airport for your onward flight, travelling under own arrangements.
