African Safari Vacation - South Africa and Botswana - Tongabezi Lodge, Kwara Island Safari Camp, Lagoon Camp, Cellars Country House

Days 1 and 2 - Tongabezi, Livingstone, Zambia

On arrival into Johannesburg, South Africa connect with a scheduled flight departing at 1035 to Livingstone, Zambia. On arrival at 1210 you will be met and taken to Tongabezi where you stay for two nights in a cottage (fully inclusive of meals and activities).

A safari vacation in Zambia, Botswana and South Africa will provide both you and your spouse with some fantastic safari memories. These three countries have some of the most luxurious lodges, camps and guides for the perfect African safari.

Forty minutes upstream from Victoria Falls,Zambia, in an idyllic spot on the banks of the majestic Upper Zambezi River, lies Tongabezi Lodge and for fifteen years Tongabezi has treated its guests to a wonderfully relaxing stay.

Tongabezi has five luxury 'river cottages' each located by the riverbank and beautifully decorated with large bed, elegant furniture and en-suite bath and shower, with an area outside for relaxing. There are also four enormous and imaginatively designed 'houses' under immense thatched roofs, with open views to the river and each with a discreetly located sunken outdoor bath also with views right across the Zambezi.

The standard of cuisine is superb and the degree of service and attention to detail at Tongabezi is just right, and there are people on hand to cater for your every need, yet if you want to be alone you will be left to enjoy the day as you please. For those who want to venture to Victoria Falls there are regular trips to see the mile wide waterfall, and you can enjoy flights over the Falls by light aircraft, helicopter and microlite, as well as a day's white water rafting for the more energetic. If you want to remain at Tongabezi they have banana boats and canoes and you can enjoy watching some of the 450 species of beautiful birds which inhabit this region of the Upper Zambezi.

Tongabezi also has its own private island - Sindabezi - which is located in the middle of the Zambezi about ten minutes boat ride (or an hour's canoe trip) from the main lodge. It is usually possible to arrange for you to visit the island or stay the night in one of their three charming cottages (either in advance or during your stay).

Activities included in the rate at Tongabezi are: sunset/sunrise boat trips, fishing, bird walks, gorge walks, afternoon canoeing, visit to Zambian side of the Falls, visit to Livingstone markets and local Chief's village, game drives in Mosi-Oa-tunya National Park and visit to the museum. All other activities are payable direct.

Days 3 to 5 - Lagoon Camp, Linyanti Delta, Botswana

You will be transferred one hour by road to Kasane, Botswana. Once you have cleared Customs & Immigration you connect with a light aircraft flight taking you into the Linyanti Delta where you stay for three nights at Lagoon Camp (fully inclusive of meals and activities).

Lagoon Camp is located on the largest private safari game viewing reserve in Botswana - the Kwando Concession, which extends for 2320km_ and which has a private river frontage along the Kwando River extending for fifty miles. Only two camps share this immense area of prime game viewing country - Lagoon Camp and its sister camp, Lebala, which lies 35kms to the south. The Concession encompasses part of the Linyanti and Kwando river systems which includes slow flowing rivers and big lagoons leading on to areas of rich forest, ebony, marula and sausage trees. Further afield are great expanses of open grassland dotted with baobab trees with isolated waterholes.

This huge area of land supports large numbers of animals including large herds of elephant and buffalo, a wide variety of antelope including water-adapted species such as tsessebe and endangered species like roan and sable, as well as giraffe and other plains game. This is also a particularly good area of seeing predators and lion are very much in evidence, as well as leopard and cheetah. A pack of wild dogs have also denned in the area for the last eight years running.

Because Lagoon safari camp is set on private land you can enjoy the widest range of game viewing options here including drives by open vehicle during the day and at night when a spotlight is used to see nocturnal creatures, and you can also enjoy walking at the discretion of the guides. On these walks you are accompanied by a tracker as well as an armed guide, following the course of old elephant paths through the bush, walking along the river's banks pausing regularly to look at tracks, to learn fascinating facts about plants and to admire birds and the beautiful scenery. You can also enjoy boat rides at Lagoon Camp on the Kwando River using the camp's double-decker river boat, which is particularly good for bird watching and for watching animals as they come down to drink at sunset. A perfectly romantic evening whilst on a beautiful Honeymoon.

The accommodation is in eight luxury tented rooms with king size or twin beds, safari furniture, en-suite flush w.c., shower and hand basins with hot/cold running water, and fine views across the lagoon. The camp has an excellent staff of guides, is very well managed and the standard of cuisine is very good indeed.

Days 6 to 8 Kwara Island Camp, Okavango Delta, Botswana

After your morning activity you will be transferred by light aircraft to Kwara Island Camp, Botswana where you stay for three nights (fully inclusive of meals and activities).

Kwara Island Safari Camp sits in the heart of the Okavango Delta on a very large private area of land, which encompasses not only the open lagoons and shallow waterways of the Okavango, but also great expanses of savannah and forest leading to the Moremi Wildlife Reserve. Altogether the Kwara Reserve measures 1750km_ and the camp itself is hidden on a large wooded island with just four huge tents set on raised wooden decks. The view from each tent is excellent and encompasses the plains and lagoons of the delta and each has en-suite w.c. and shower, two wash basins and large bed with safari furniture and veranda.

Because the reserve has so many different types of habitat you can expect to enjoy excellent game viewing here, including sightings of big herds of plains game such as zebra, wildebeest, a variety of antelope, giraffe and buffalo. The reserve also has resident prides of lion, as well as leopard and hyena and you can also expect to see a host of smaller creatures such as warthog, baboon and, on night drives, porcupine and civet cats. Elephants are also present in large numbers and you can spend hours watching these magnificent creatures, with their complex family structures, roaming the Okavango floodplains. The night and day safari game drives with your guide is a fantastic way to view these animals in there natural habitats.

You can enjoy a wide variety of game viewing activities including traditional mokoro canoeing, boating, walks with an armed guide and tracker and drives by open vehicle during the day and at night. Because of this variety and flexibility we usually recommend a stay of at least three nights here.

The honeymoon tent is located on the edge of the camp some distance from the rest of the tents and overlooks a 'pan' where animals regularly gather. It is a little larger than the other tents and is the only one with a bath. This incorporates elegance and luxury on a once in a lifetime honeymoon vacation in Botswana.

Days 9 to 11 - Cellars Country House, Cape Town, South Africa

After lunch you will be transferred by light aircraft to Maun, Botswana, for flight BP271 departing at 1530 to Cape Town, South Africa. On arrival at 1800 you will be met and taken to Cellars Country House where you stay for three nights (bed and breakfast).

A hire car will be delivered to Cellars on Thursday afternoon for your use during your stay in Cape Town, South Africa.

Cellars Country House is one of the finest places to stay in the Cape. For many years this Relais et Chateaux property has provide stylish accommodation, superb cuisine and wonderful service, and many clients return there year after year.

The Cellars is located in the heart of the Constantia Valley just twenty minutes drive from Cape Town and on the lower slopes of Table Mountain, next to the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. In fact its own gardens are an attractive feature with lovely ancient trees, manicured lawns, attractive herbaceous borders and a stream.

The house is a magnificently restored 18th century manor house and the interior is stylishly decorated and elegantly furnished in keeping with the style of the original house.

In 1662, Jan van Riebeeck sailed into Table Bay on the north Cape Peninsula and laid the foundations of South Africa's oldest settlement, Cape Town. Three hundred and fifty years of history have been preserved in much of Cape Town's architecture, which combines attractively with the more functional demands of the 21st century.

The Houses of Parliament, National Gallery, Museum and Planetarium are all within ambling distance of elegant shopping malls and colorful markets, which entice shoppers to browse and buy everything from souvenirs to African art, gems and antiques. In the last ten years, the restoration of the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront dockland area evokes images of 19th century seafaring activities and provides a superb setting for an array of cafes, restaurants and bars. From here, you can take boat trips round the harbor and out across Table Bay.

Dominating the city's skyline and flanked by Devils Peak is the looming mass of Table Mountain, and visitors should not miss the opportunity to ascend Table Mountain by cable car. The view of the City and the south Atlantic from the summit is quite magnificent.

There is a wide range of excursions and activities in and around Cape Town including visits to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was held prisoner, visits to Townships where you can enjoy lunch and exposure to Africa's vibrant urban culture. To the south lies the scenic Peninsula with its attractive sandy bays and pretty little towns. There are remote penguin colonies which can be visited by boat and canoe, and from July to November you can set off further afield in search of southern right whales. The more adventurous can even go looking for sharks in special "caged diving" facilities.

An hour's drive to the east of Cape Town lie the Cape Winelands where you find beautiful undulating scenery covered in ancient vineyards and fruit orchards. There are literally dozens of ancient wineries, many of which are open for tastings and lunch and which have magnificent estate houses. For the golfer there are several beautifully maintained championship golf courses, and the attractive little towns of Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are each worth a visit.

Zambia combines fantastically with Botswana and South Africa for a perfect safari Vacation, where you can experience a once in a lifetime opportunity at some of Africa's most beautiful Safari camps, as well as relaxing in Cape Town with the breath taking views of Table mountain.
