Anna Teversham's Botswana Safari Experience

Location: The wonderful Okavango Delta

Accommodation: Abu Camp and Elephant Back Safaris

A scheduled flight took me as far as Maun in Botswana and I then boarded a light aircraft which took me over the Okavango Delta's watery expanse to Abu Camp. After a very beautiful flight we were met at the air strip and our guide took us by jeep to camp where we were greeted by a fantastic tribal song sung by the staff at Abu.

The hosts at Abu camp, Bernadette and Graham, answered all of our questions about the habituated elephants, how they each had arrived at Abu and what days consisted of for them. I was fortunate to enjoy an elephant back safari early the following morning. The elephants at Abu camp are very gentle and the slowly lowered themselves to enable us to climb aboard before we set off into the dusty bush. Abu camp is a completely unique experience and with fantastic game viewing and expert hosting I would not hesitate to recommend the camp to both the experience safari goer and first timer alike.

Location: A different area of the Okavango Delta

Accommodation: Marvellous Tubu Tree Camp

A few days later I was flying high above the delta channels again but this time in a helicopter that took me to Tubu Tree Camp. The game in the Tubu tree region was spectacular. I was really lucky to have seen a large pack of wild dogs which a couple of times were caught growling at the baboons! One unforgetable game experiences was when we tracked two lionesses supporting each other in the hunt of a small herd of zebra. We kept our distance but there were occasions when we were close enough to freeze in our seats as the lionesses doubled back and walked stealthily past our jeep. Hearts pounding, the guides in silence, you could hear the big cats low rumbling chests. What an experience!

The guides at Tubu tree were very friendly often recounting stories to us as we enjoyed our days out on safari. The rooms at Tubu were large and the pool and bar area were such a treat after a long game drive.

Location: Okavango Delta

Accommodation: Vumbura Plains

After another helicopter ride above the watery delta below I arrived at Vumbura Plains. Once again as I climbed out of the helicopter my guide was there to great me and carried my bags to the landrover for the short ride into camp. Vumbura Plains was very different to what I had imagined. Sand blasted pine board walkways interlinked each large room, which on entrance opened up into a huge space that included my own private plunge pool and dining area.

The staff at Vumbura were fantastic and put on a traditional evening for the guests, that included traditional dancing and singing which was enjoy immensely by all. The game was again excellent, on my last morning game drive my guide Peter tracked down a male cheetah which had just eaten a very large breakfast. It was an excellent memory to take away with me from a superb camp.

Location: Linyanti Region

Accommodation: Kings Pool Camp

Even before leaving the office I knew to expect that Kings Pool would be quite luxurious and I definitely was not disappointed. The camp rooms were very large and comfortably furnished and the outside shower, plunge pool, sala and a large veranda gave the most magnificent view of Namibia and the river below.

The game around Kings Pool was prolific. Game drives continued to present me with creatures I had not yet seen and Copper, my guide, was great at spotting animals through the bush and managed to find us a lioness with two six month old cubs. Although we sat and watched the mother for some time lick clean her cubs I could have sat there all day, this is a memory I will never forget.

Botswana is a country of true untouched beauty and to spend a week in the heart of the Delta was amazing. The game at all the camps was superb and I have come away with many wonderful memories. If you would like to talk to me personally about any of these camps or others that you would like to incorporate into an itinerary, please do not hesitate to contact me.
