The Selous is Africa's largest protected wildlife region with millions of animals and amazing scenery including mighty rivers, forests, lakes and spectacular hill country. Sand Rivers Lodge is outstanding and you could easily spend up to a week here and, if you wish to, take extended walking safaris.
A vast and virtually unexplored area, Ruaha has great expanses of plains and rich forests that hold immense wildlife potential. Chris Fox's Mwagusi Camp is the place to stay here. Katavi is even more isolated yet between June and October it provides some of Africa's most exciting wildlife as huge prides of lion, antelope elephant and buffalo concentrate around the scarce permanent rivers. One can enjoy game drives and walks from Chada Camp and the more adventurous can spend a night fly camping with the sounds of Africa all around you.
A visit to see some of our nearest relatives is a real treat. You can find hundreds of chimpanzees in the stunning montane forest beside the crystal clear waters of Lake Tanganyika . Roland and Zoe Purcell will take you to sit amongst the many chimpanzees, where you can observe and absorb their natural behaviour, combined with birding in the forest and swimming and fishing in the lake.
Between April to the end of May is the rainy season in this part of the world therefore the ideal time to visit is between June and at the end of October .
These are immense "unexplored" areas where you can enjoy game viewing and safari walks in complete privacy. Due to the huge potential and space in these remote places you can easily spend a week in each one. So you can enjoy active safaris, yet build in "time off" to simply take in the beauty. Selous is ideal for a short break vacation as it is very accessible. As you venture inland to Ruaha, Mahale and Katavi the long flying distances make the cost higher.
These areas are excellent to visit most of the year but closed from late March to the end of May.
